Home FAQ

Can the au pair leave the country to go on vacation with the host family?

This is no problem insofar the journey takes place within the term the au pair is legally permitted to stay in Belgium. Could you please inform Au Pair Belgium about this beforehand?

How long the search for a suitable au pair and the administrative procedure for the placement in our family will take?

The application for a work permit (if necessary) will usually take three to six weeks. The duration of the application of a visa may variate a lot. In principle the search and the administrative procedure will take less time for EU au pairs than for non-EU au pairs. Since we work with local agents and recognised institutions in the home country of our au pairs the placement will take less time than in other circumstances.

Who will bear the costs for the transport of the au pair from the home country to Belgium and back?

These transport costs are in principle to be borne by the au pair. However the host family is free to interfere in these costs and to bear part or all of them. It is recommended to come to an agreement about this with the au pair early in the procedure. If you so wish, Au Pair Belgium can assist you in finding a flight or train ticket at afordable prices.

Is the host family free to choose the nationality of the au pair ?

Each host family can freely choose the nationality of his future au pair. If you do not have a distinct preference, Au Pair Belgium will be better placed to look for a qualified and caring candidate because you will be able to choose amongst a broader offer of candidates.

We recruit our au pairs for example in the following countries:

  • In Asia: Indonesia, Thailand and China
  • In South-America: Colombia, Mexico and Peru
  • in Russia: Russia, Moldavia and Oekraine
  • in Africa: South Africa, Cameroon

What will happen if the au pair does not fit in the host family after arrival ?

If your first au pair experience fails, Au Pair Belgium guarantees that you will have one additional chance to host another au pair in your family. This replacement will be free of charge for the agency under the condition that you inform us in writing at latest one month after the arrival of the au pair in Belgium (see terms and conditions in the agreement for the placement of an au pair).

Can the au pair stay longer than one year in the host family ?

Only Au Pairs of EU member States can stay longer than 12 months in Belgium if you apply at least 1 month before the expiry of the initial term for an extension. Au pairs of non-EU member States can stay in Belgium for maximum 12 months (no extension possible).
