Home Au pairs Rights


In Belgium an au pair has amongst others the following rights:

  • a private bedroom in the host family's house and free access to their house
  • a monthly pocket allowance of at least 450 euro (also due during the au pair's vacation)
  • cost and living borne by the host family
  • an insurance covering medical, pharmaceutical and hospitalisation costs as well as the costs of an early repatriation
  • attend language courses (Dutch, French or German) in a recognised school
  • at least 1 day off per week, 1 complete weekend per month and 1 week per 6 months stay

According to the legal provisions an au pair can take care of children and light household chores  for maximum 4 hours per day and maximum 20 hours per week. These chores cannot be the main objective of the au pair's placement.
